October of 2002, five female friends and I drove from southern Utah to Laguna Beach to attend a week-long seminar that would prove to stretch me in many important ways.
The first day of the seminar, I was seated next to my friend, Michele, towards the middle of the long narrow room. During the presenter’s initial remarks, my peripheral vision was periodically drawn to an area on my left and up a few feet, maybe 10 feet away from where I sat. Though I was attuned to the message of the speaker, my attention was repeatedly pulled by something near the side wall that I was “seeing” with my inner eyes. Probably no one in the room shared my awareness. Possibly the experience was just for me. Though my physical eyes saw nothing but the temporal room with its material furnishings, I could not shake the knowing that some “Thing” was there. Some “Thing” very Real and calling for my attention. Each time I glanced that way, I focused and understood a little more. At first view, I “saw” a tall man. A couple minutes later, returning my gaze to the area in question, I “saw” that he was thin. Later, I understood that he was wearing a tall black hat…. He wore a blue coat….. He had a dark beard…. I then realized that it was the essence of “Abraham Lincoln.” Staring. Directly. At. Me.
I certainly was not expecting to have this experience, nor was Lincoln anywhere in my current thoughts. Yet, no mistake, here “he” stood just a few feet from me, seeming to be deeply focused upon… me! I was a little unnerved, yet greatly humbled by this unforeseen attention.
A while later, the presenter had us pair up with someone we didn’t already know to practice utilizing the principles she had been discussing. I asked the woman I paired with if she was aware of Lincoln standing there and that “he” had been looking intently right at me the entire morning. She responded nonplussed that he must have a message for me. Feeling more empowered now, I turned toward “him,” fully opened up my mind and asked “him” if “he” needed my help. Was there something I could do for “him”? I then tuned in and “heard”: “I have been assigned to be a guide for you. I will help you. Just as I was required to hold the Union together… you have a far greater stewardship for global unification. Together, we will hold the world together. Do not fear. With my help… it shall be done.”
As the words soaked in, I thanked him. Although I accepted and trusted his message, it would be many years before I would understand the magnitude of “Abraham’s” communication. I pondered how I had memorized, and taught to my young children, a poem about his courage.* I had long held deep respect for the man.
Today, it appears, the world has descended into such chaos and dis-harmony that only drastic measures can suffice as a “fix.” Yet, I have come to establish such abiding Trust in the (usually unseen) Powers that have been allowing mankind to acquire our preparatory experiences. There are many who have gone before us who have given their lives, their loves, their blood, sweat, and tears, to assist humanity. There are many currently who are prepared to do the same. Although many wait for their “Savior” to come clean up the messes “we” have gotten ourselves into, perhaps there are sufficient number now who are prepared to roll up our shirt sleeves and get to work. Accepting all the wisdom provided by his-story, we can stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us, completing the vision for which they labored.
“With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow and his orphan – to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.” Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address, March 4, 1865.

If I were a clerk in a country store,
A long, long time ago,
And I had miscounted a penny or more,

To the lady’s house when work was done
To give her a penny or two?

He was honest and he was true.
Suppose I had borrowed another’s book

Such courage never fails.
