Today’s the day…!
Sufficient has been delivered. The soil is adequately prepared. The seeds have grown into seedlings which have continued into saplings healthy and ready to enter into full maturity and provide sweet fruit.
Yes, Today marks the day (in the cold stillness of winter outside)… for initiating the Harvest.
Perhaps You, dear reader, will take a few moments and sincerely (as a pure little child) consider what was recently shared within the following post, written by Rod Vessels: https://www.quora.com/Is-the-account-of-Jesus-taken-from-the-story-of-Serapis-Christus/answer/Rod-Vessels?ch=1&share=ac871022&srid=l1o4&fbclid=IwAR2qIZJaIXz2GdHjcSdNiiMGrD3gAimZi14yBvQ2Jmtn35IO6V7CNVFhjrQ
Additionally, I encourage you to re-read my post from 1-22-19 before venturing further….
Okay… now we’re back together again. 🙂
(Prepare, Bishops, Popes, and Priests! Relax, doctors and scientists! 🙂 Your egos just might not appreciate what I reveal, but… I’m writing anyway! )
The one known throughout history as “Jesus,” set straight within the link above as “Inpendius,” was not conceived sexually. [Whatever cord that strikes within You, I suggest that as long as you have made it this far, you continue to read… with a child-like opened mind of wonder and awe.] I was there at that time. I am here now. I knew both Socrates and Inpendius, the individuals upon whom the character “Jesus” was woven. Giving their lives for the Truth, both Socrates and Inpendius, and later “Jesus,” and others, prepared the world for my post today… at least for the few in the world so far who are prepared.
Yet, because precious hints of “Truth” that were initially often veiled in symbolism have been further convoluted and twisted, few have understood their teachings regarding the mortal dilemma. Without understanding, many have perished.
I open a sealed book this day.
YOU… dear reader… You contain within you the “two trees planted within the Garden of Eden.” Let that sink in a bit.
You… are either a desert wilderness (a “lone and dreary world”) OR a lush and fruitful garden, depending upon how you choose to utilize these two trees and the element of which you are made. And, depending upon your choices in utilizing your precious body, the kingdom which houses your garden, determines your eventual body and its available power and abilities.
You see, you contain within you two trunks, or neural networks, that weave throughout your physical body. These two trunks have been symbolically taught as “trees.” Since trees have branches and bear fruit, the symbolism works. The way you feel because of your choices of action bear witness (fruit) to which of the two trees you are partaking: “The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”… OR… “The Tree of Life.”
Again, YOU are the (figurative) Garden of Eden; at least you were when in your original pure and child-like state. You came into your first mortal life, filled with trust. The world was good, your needs were simple and always met, there was a continual state of safety. Yet, for each of us, the time came when that trust proved unwarranted, our sense of safety waned, and we learned to withdraw degrees of trust from our primary caretakers while simultaneously looking around for someone else reliable in whom to place that trust. Without that element of trust and wonder, an individual becomes a desert wilderness. We, our self, as helpless little children unable to procure food and lodging and other necessities that provide a feeling of “safety,” naturally lost some of our initial exuberant confidence and adopted patterns of panic and hopelessness.
Again (as always), Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, particularly Matthew 5: 3-12, comes to our rescue, presenting the way back to that realm of security and peace… “heaven.” As helpless, hopeless physically mature yet emotionally/spiritually/mentally IM-mature “little children” who are “poor in spirit,” we must… for our own full development’s sake… “come unto me,” in order to regain our inner exuberance and confidently grow in spirit. Or rather, we must re-gain our initial purity while claiming true reasoning abilities, in order to regain our original birth-right blessing of trusting that life is beneficent and safe.
In a nutshell, it is only when you learn to love your self that you can trust your self. But in order to love your self you must come to know your self, who you Really are, not who you have pretended to be in order to get your needs met. The paradox is that you can’t hear correctly your inner voice guiding you into self knowing and self loving and thus, self trusting, as long as you are living as the counterfeit identity you adopted in order to survive and grow up to (relative) adulthood!
Thus, my life and my posts are attempts to help You dis-cover and rise in love with YOU! To the degree that you come to see who YOU Really are, you will regain back your ability to hear your inner voice, follow that inner voice, and… come to trust its reliability. When one trusts them self they are capable of following that inner voice to self knowing, the gnosis I wrote about yesterday. Concurrent with one’s degree of Self-love (L.O.V.E.) is one’s degree of being able to correctly L.O.V.E. and interact with all others with emotional mastery. Yet, and here’s the hitch, one can NOT trust one’s self… or any others… when they are partaking of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. (“Trust not in the arm of flesh.”) While in a state of panic or when utilizing a feeling of hopelessness (in any degree), we are incapable of “hearing” that inner voice… correctly, receiving trust-worthy direction, and learning who we Truly are. And that’s the conundrum!
Stay with me, I’ll show you the way out of your trap if you’re willing. 🙂
Let’s return now to your garden and its trees. Here is a map of your inner terrain, a chart of your Autonomic Nervous System, displaying what your inner garden/ wilderness looks like:
Even before the story of “Jesus” was contrived by Canaeus in about 400 A.D., in about 100 A.D. Claudius Galen, a physician to the Roman gladiators, upon conducting autopsies on these gladiators (after their death of course!), discovered the two parts of what he termed the autonomic nervous system (our figurative two trees). His work stood and has been taught for these intervening centuries. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) monitors and regulates the visceral organs (the heart, lungs, gall bladder, stomach, intestines, kidneys, and sexual organs). Since the regulation occurs automatically, without conscious thought, the name “autonomic” was given. Again, without conscious thought, the ANS is the Overseer or “Lord” of the body.
An understanding of the possible responses to danger will help you look more objectively at how you handle life’s challenges, and determine if the current “Lord” within your nervous system should be dethroned or allowed to stay. You might wish to ask your self: “What is the quality of my life so far?” “Have I arrived at the place of calm composure… even amidst threat?” “Have I, like ‘Jesus,’ achieved Emotional Mastery?” “Do I Know Who I Am in the eternal realm of things?” “Have I reached gnosis?” “Do I know the mysteries of godliness in full?” If not, then continue reading so that you can learn how to reset your nervous system for optimal function.
First, it is important to realize that humans categorize how they feel about events according to their safety. Through one’s physical senses (including thought), but most importantly through one’s Intuition, our nervous system is continually assessing potential threat. “Is this person or setting worthy of my trust?” “Can I relax and feel comfortable in their presence?” “Am I truly safe here?”
Like all animals, humans receive and interpret sensory signals from the environment and then send out messages throughout the body to direct the response. Animals with a defined head possess a two-part nervous system: the central nervous system (CNS) which consists of the animal’s brain and central neurons, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The PNS is further divided into two systems: the Somatic nervous system (SNS) which carries signals to and from the skeletal muscles and controls many of an animal’s voluntary responses to signals in its environment; and the Autonomic nervous system (ANS) which controls the mostly (apparently) involuntary internal processes in the body.
Since Galen introduced the ANS in about 100 AD, it has generally been believed that there were two distinct branches of the ANS, and, depending upon which branch is appointed as the “Bishop” (Overseer/ Lord), the other is the “servant”/ supporter. Conceived as being like a see-saw, the prevalent view has been that one was always teetering to one side or the other in a state of either stress or relaxation. With this understanding, it has been taught that the branch of the nervous system weaving through the spinal column, the sympathetic (S), governs the symptoms of and reactions to stress while the other, the parasympathetic (P) operates to relax the organs and tissues. The two parts (trees) of the nervous system have been taught for all these years as functioning in two opposing states: “Fight and Flight” OR “Rest and Digest” (which is also sometimes called “Feed and Breed”).
These two ways of operating in one’s life (depending upon which “tree” one utilized as one’s automatic “overseer”) is determined by how one learned early on to deal with stress, with “mommy” being the initial and most important mentor.
Merely twenty-five years ago, Stephen Porges advanced what he termed the “Polyvagal Theory.” Realizing that there was more to the prevaling two opposing forces theory of the autonomic nervous system, Porges uncovered that there are actually two different parts (the dorsal and the ventral) of the parasympathetic system! The Vagus Nerve, which is the 10th and by far the largest and most important of all the cranial nerves, has two divisions itself! The term “poly” means “more than one” and so the enlightened understanding of the two-branched nervous system (parasympathetic, including the dorsal and the ventral) became re-named the “polyvagal” system. Although, being TWO instead of MANY, it could just as easily have been termed the “BI-vagal” system with its enhanced understanding/ theory.
In religious terms, Adam, the original solitary character within one’s “garden” represents the dorsal branch of the parasympathetic circuit of the ANS. And Eve, the newly discovered ventral branch, has been created (come to life/ developed) from his rib. 🙂
The “Dorsal” part of the Parasympathetic Branch of the Autonomic Nervous System
Before the masses of mankind had access to x-rays, microscopes, or autopsies, and thus were without the ability to see what lay within their body, true messengers (those who had understanding of the unseen), taught mankind through symbolism. “Adam” was the term given to represent the most primary mode to deal with trauma. Adam, or primarily utilizing the dorsal pathway of the ANS to re-act to the incoming stimuli in one’s environment, resulted in reacting to a stressful situation through surrender or submission; in other words, immobilization. Enlisting this neural circuitry as our primary mode of re-action means that when threatened, we reflexively shut down. In contrast to the “fight or flight mobilization” (to be elaborated on in a moment), IM-mobilization causes a total loss of motor tone, as when mammals reflexively pass out and feign death to avoid a predator.
The dorsal (D) branch of the vagus is the most rudimentary circuit within the autonomic nervous system and is shared by all animals. This circuit stimulates routine functions such as the secretion of digestive enzymes or saliva and slows the heart rate down after physical exertion or after the fight-or-flight response is no longer perceived as needed. Until recently, these qualities of the vagus nerve were, basically, all that was known of the PNS. Now, with the discovery of the TWO very different parts and their unique qualities, that section of the vagus nerve, the primary and most rudimentary circuit, has been renamed the dorsal branch. (Again, “Adam” has had “Eve” taken out from “him” to become “her” own separate entity.) The vagus circuit has become two power sources: Adam and Eve, the dorsal and the ventral.
It is the dorsal branch that takes over during an act of complete submission. When the gazelle realizes that he is the lion’s dinner, no matter how he has tried to out-zig-zag him, he lets go. And that act of complete surrender brings him not only great peace, but a flood of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine along with the hormone oxytocin. His “death” then becomes a pay-off for his contribution to the cycle of life. This utilization of the dorsal branch is a correct application. Coming perhaps once in a lifetime, it serves the host’s needs appropriately.
Although other living creatures facing or sensing mortal danger instinctively utilize this immobilization ploy for self-preservation, now that humans have alternatives, they only have the need to immobilize as a last resort to threat. Since this involuntary reflex slows the heart and lungs, it can cause a terrified person to faint, or it can completely immobilize the person who suddenly freezes or “plays dead.” Immobilization can cause a loss of awareness and bodily feelings, even consciousness, and one can become numb and dissociate. Unlike the metabolically costly “fight-or-flight” mobilization which diverts many bodily systems to confront danger or escape, by utilizing the dorsal branch of the parasympathetic nervous system one conserves physiological resources by putting the body into a freeze or “play dead” mode.
Okay now, to tie further strands together, this most primitive of circuits is the “super-ego” in Freudian terms, “Adam” in religious symbolism. Originally in mankind’s development, this “clamming up” or going limp physically and emotionally was how one interacted with another (“bully”) who began to utilize his self-centered awareness to give advise and in other ways operate with unwanted control. Although the large-scale implementation of the dorsal nervous system to perceived stress allowed for relative peace in the community, it did not prevent the “passive-aggressive” feelings of perceived slight within one’s individual kingdom. By primarily utilizing the dorsal vagus to Immobilize under threat, symbolically, “Adam was a lone man in the Garden of Eden.”
Reptiles and amphibians who deal exclusively from dorsal regulation have no social interaction. Female reptiles lay their eggs, and then the mother may never even see her offspring. When they hatch, these offspring live largely solitary lives, fending for themselves until they also leave “cold-blooded” progeny who proceed to live solitary lives. Similarly, when mankind deals with the dorsal vagus as their “overseer” or master-commander, they lack significant positive social interaction. Yet, the reptilian life was never intended to be mankind’s lot.
The Sympathetic Branch of the Autonomic Nervous System
Mankind’s original quest was to develop emotionally, in other words, to grow in spirit. In order to do this, communities of rallying individuals were required. As individuals began participating cooperatively, bullies also came onto the playground. Yes, as in the Genesis (or LDS Endowment) stories, “Lucifer” entered into “Adam’s” garden. Seen as the adversary, which he is, still “Lucifer” is a very necessary oppositional factor for emotional growth. This opposing force offers opportunities to experiment with contrasting ways to handle stress and the challenges that arise in dealing and interacting with other individuals. These challenges allow for emotional strength-training. Enter in the sympathetic branch, or the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil“ which “Lucifer” provides. Some of the experiments with challenges seem to go well (taste sweet, be “good“), while others do not fare so well (taste bitter, are “evil“). Thus, a reflective human can learn from his mistakes and course-correct.
The sympathetic nervous system’s purpose is to “automatically” (again, by-passing consciousness so that it can be FAST as needed) stimulate the body when action is required. This is the part of the nervous system responsible for the “fight-or-flight” response, stimulating a surge of adrenaline to give the body quick energy so that it can escape from danger. The sympathetic nervous system also quickens the heart rate to move blood through the blood vessels faster and releases sugar from the liver’s glycogen stores into the blood so fuel is readily available to the cells.
The sympathetic branch, that which extends along one’s spine, is the “id” that Freud spoke about, otherwise known as “Lucifer” in the Genesis (or LDS Temple Endowment) account. Necessary to the human dilemma, this branch of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) developed so that it could also become activated when one’s survival is threatened. While utilizing this spinal sympathetic chain (S), we are propelled to motion, in contrast to the paralyzation effect of the parasympathetic chain (P). When utilizing this sympathetic branch, we come alive with extra “juices” which allow us to fight or flee the threatening situation.
When one consciously perceives (through the five physical senses and one’s sixth sense of thought) that their environment is not safe, or even Unconsciously senses a lack of safety, then the nervous system relies upon the primary programmed-in instinct. Although the original mode of reaction to a dangerous situation was through the dorsal branch and resulted in some form of IM-mobilization, mankind now has two choices. Currently, the most commonly chosen “instinctual” course of action is through mobilization. When risk or danger cues are detected, the body cascades protective reactions, programmed-in instincts, that we simplistically call “stress.” This sympathetic nervous system rallies the resources needed to mobilize through the perceived danger that confronts us.
Picture the gazelle as its awareness registers the approaching lion. The sympathetic nervous system (S) automatically, without him at that critical moment consciously making the choice, surveys the situation and pumps out neurotransmitters such as adrenaline and the hormones of cortisol and insulin. Now, because his blood supply has been called back from the brain and internal organs, and while his heart and lungs have been turned into “over-drive,” the gazelle runs for all he’s worth. If lucky, his greater ability to zig-zag his course will prove stronger than the lion’s greater speed, and the gazelle gets away. If not, he submits within the lion’s jaws and claws as his brain now delivers the elixir of all elixirs, oxytocin, and he blissfully enjoys his final moments as he contributes his elements to the circle of life.
Nature strives for balance in every choice.
Yet, mortals are not gazelles or lions. Neither are they reptiles. Reptiles utilize the PNS exclusively in their defense. Running from lions is not a part of their story. Like a house mouse caught in the grip of a cat, a lizard plays dead when confronted with a perceived threat to their safety. Whereas the (S) utilized the initial mobilization (“Quick! Run for your life!”), when the mouse or lizard realizes that it is caught without escape, then the dorsal branch of the (P) utilizes IM-mobilization (“Act dead and just maybe you’ll be too boring to pursue!”) Again, mortals do not belong to the animal kingdom… though many have thought… and pretended… to.
Originally, our “natural” defense system was similar to reptiles when under attack: quit (nearly) breathing, (almost) stop your heart, lay down and play dead. However, unlike frogs and turtles and lizards, mortals cannot go long without oxygen. This state of immobilization during threat proved to be an unwise choice for the long-term. Thus, over the course of his-story, as the reasoning powers of man have developed along with his sense of individualism and his mirror neurons which allowed for him to “see through another’s eyes,” so has his adoption of more evolved and efficient ways of responding to attack. Not only the male portion of “mankind,” but the females also who became the mothers who taught further “mankind,” yes, even and especially the females also learned to deal more readily with the sympathetic response, until, sadly, the sympathetic response became the programmed-in instincts for many of us.
It was the growing propensity to “fight back” that “Moses” attempted to rebalance and re-direct by giving appropriate regulation: “Fight fairly! Only take ONE of his eyes if he has taken one of yours!” The up-graded rules for justice attempted to regulate mortal affairs until a greater percentage of humanity were ready for “Jesus'” up-graded rules of compassion which were an attempt to rebalance and re-direct mankind further. “Do not even fight back! Instead, turn the other cheek. Do not judge. Give freely with no thought of return. Love your enemies as well as your friends.”
Indeed, this is the nature of most mammals. Mammals, who are animals that give birth to live helpless offspring, nursing and caring for them until they are able to fend for themselves, at that time becoming an equal member of their community or pack… mammals live in balance and harmony with nature. Mammals are socially cooperative creatures.
Yet, mankind has a ways to go to catch up with the “lower beasts.” Thus, “Jesus'” injunction: “Know ye not that ye are less than the dust of the earth?!” Even the dust and elements of this planet obey nature’s commands and know their place. Even the dust of the earth seeks for the greater good of all. Yet, mankind has not yet learned that simple and profound principle. “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your god (your Self).” In other words, “Know ye not that ye are your brother’s keeper?” Or, “Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Or, “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” Or, “As I (who gave my life for you) have loved you, love one another.” Or….
It is through denying and rebelling against these primal commands that mankind has “fallen.” The spiritual “fall” is nothing more or less than utilizing the automatic responses of the sympathetic nervous system to fight each other in an attempt to assert one’s own individual self. OR, utilizing the automatic responses of the dorsal branch of the parasympathetic nervous system to give other “Lucifer’s” power over us by becoming depressed or otherwise Immobilized. In this way, mortals descended beneath the animal kingdom and have become ensnared in a trap of offense-taking, justifying their fighting or fighting-back or “learned helplessness”/ passive-aggressive “instincts.”
In climbing the fulcrum of BALANCE, that upon which all in creation exists, “true messengers” have periodically come to assist humanity’s emotional growth into maturity and mastery by mentoring them ever upward and forward as each experiments upon and learns how to equalize both sides of the scale:
LOVING SELF (CORRECTLY)… … … … … … … … … and … … … … … … … … … (CORRECTLY) LOVING ALL OTHERS
Only about twenty years ago, the understanding of there being two circuits within the autonomic nervous system was proven as incomplete and even inaccurate. (Do your own research if you’d like on the “Polyvagal Theory” first proposed by Stephen W. Porges.) But, I will get to its clarification in a moment. I would first like to tell you a story.
“Goldilocks and the Three Bears”… as told by me.
Once a young girl, in her meandering through the forest, realized that she was quite hungry. Hmmm… where can I stop to eat?” she mused.
Ahhh, up ahead of her loomed a quaint little cottage. “I wonder who lives there?” she thought to herself. Knocking on the door, she waited. No answer. Goldilocks, so named because of her brilliant golden curls, waited a few moments before knocking again. STILL, no answer. Following the next growl of her stomach, Goldilocks overturned her mother’s warnings and ventured within the house of strangers. And what did she find? The house was empty! No one was home! Yet, there before her hungry belly, was a wooden table laden with… three bowls of porridge! Wasting no time, Goldilocks sat down at the nearest, biggest, bowl. Using the large silver spoon on its right, she scooped up a bite of the cereal… and spit it quickly back into the bowl. Arrrgh! It was “too hot!” Hungry still, Goldilocks moved to the next bowl. This one was medium-sized. Trying again, this time the spoonful revealed its contents were “too cold!” Unrelenting in her pursuit because of an aching belly, Goldilocks scooted down the bench to the smallest bowl at the other end. This time, the contents were “just right” and Goldilocks enjoyed each bite until the bowl was completely empty.
Satisfied, now the young girl put down the spoon, stretched her arms, and yawned. “Hmmm…. Maybe I can just sit and relax a few minutes before I head back out on my journey home,” she thought.
And, you know the story….
Goldilocks finds three chairs: one great big… and “too hard”; another medium-sized… and “too soft”; the third, a very small chair… was “just right.” Just right… until she fell right through it as it broke into pieces beneath her. “OUCH!”
“Oh, dear,” she sighed. Then, looking around, Goldilocks saw through the open doorway a bedroom containing three beds. Same thing. The giant bed was “too hard,” the medium bed was “too soft,” yet, the small bed was so comfy (“just right”) that Goldilocks promptly fell asleep. (Until the three bears who lived there, the rightful owners, came home… but I’ll reserve that part of the story for another day.)
As is often the case, this popular “fairytale” that many of us were raised having been told, holds tantalizing truths of the human situation. Just like “scriptures” and other myths, fairytales have been implanted in our psyches for the time when we individually consciously choose to grow in spirit and uncover their hidden secrets.
Again, lucky day.
Enter in: The Ventral Branch of the Vagus Nerve (of the Parasympathetic Nervous System)
Though many have, so far, refused to heed the “higher laws” that could provide nature’s balance even among mankind, there are sufficient today that have grown frustrated at humanity’s demise into “reptilians” or “wild beasts” by spurning the proffered “truth that could set them free.”
We are NOT “lizards”! Neither was humanity destined to habitually utilize the “fight or flight” response in their social interactions!
Whereas the state of IM-mobilization has been taught as the PNS’s only circuit, it is now realized that this second branch (called the ventral vagus nerve) of the PNS has a more elevated perspective. While the sympathetic nerve (“Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”/ serpent/ Lucifer/ id) meanders down the spine, the parasympathetic system (“Tree of Life”/ Adam-Eve/ Superego-Ego) is enclosed within the ribcage in what is called the Vagus Nerve. The newly discovered secondary branch of the PNS, the ventral, is, like the dorsal part, contained within the vagus nerve. The vagus is the longest of the nerves originating in the brain. The vagus, Greek for “wandering,” meanders through the body communicating sensory and motor impulses to our organs. Whereas about twenty percent of the signals on the vagal highway travel FROM the brain to the visceral organs, the vast majority, 80% relay messages FROM the organs back to the brain.
The most advanced of the three neural circuits, the ventral vagal complex, is unique to mammals. This circuit, or pathway, is coated with fatty myelin, which the other two circuits (the dorsal part of the PNS and the sympathetic nervous system) do not have. Myelination within the ventral vagus speeds and sharpens communications between the brain stem and the structures. Social mammals which depend on maternal caregiving rely upon the ventral vagus. This pathway soothes the newborn by slowing the heart and lungs, relaxing the muscles, and opening the mind and emotions to social bonding during sucking, vocalizing, and while listening to the pleasing tones of her mother’s voice. This ventral vagus branch of the parasympathetic nervous system is the means for mammals, and us, to connect as social creatures, learning to again trust our environment and develop into physically AND emotionally mature beings.
Until the recent development and awareness of this ventral vagus option, when judged as wrong, or evil, or attacked for somehow being “in the way,” mankind has had two choices: defend self through MOVING/FIGHTING or FAINTING; (Mobilization or IM-mobilization.) However, with the development of the ventral (front portion/ Eve) of mankind’s parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), the dorsal (back part/ Adam) now has an assistant on the front end. Indeed, Eve (ventral) is Adam’s (dorsal) “helpmeet” to which the symbolism in Genesis alluded.
Here is where the rightful overseer of the body: “Eve,” discerns the usurper: “Lucifer,” the serpent winding down the spine (the SNS). It is with “her” greater access to intelligence that “she” is able to rightly discern: “I know thee now! Thou art Lucifer! He who was cast out of Father’s presence for rebellion!” As the rightful heir to the throne, the one gifted to Adam (the dorsal branch) to be his “helpmeet” and guide him safely home to Father, Eve (the ventral vagus) has the power to cast out Lucifer! Again, remember that “Lucifer” is code for “the natural man,” or “the flesh,” which is “an enemy to god.” “Lucifer” is one’s instinctual actions to fend for one’s self (as reptiles) and preserve one’s reputation and material possessions (as “fallen” mankind). Lucifer is an enemy to god because he seeks his own self-centered welfare at the expense of what is best for all in existence. Again, the one known as “Jesus” gave more hints regarding this as he frequently taught “Know ye not that ye are ALL a part of the body of Christ?” “Love your enemies.” “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” “Jesus” taught that we are all spiritual brothers and sisters of one “Father” and that we should learn to see as the “Father” sees. And the “Father” looks, not at nationality or gender, or any other temporal designation, but he “looks upon (and sees with) the heart” (or rather, the ventral vagus).
Yet, how often were even “Jesus'” words mis-utilized. “Turn the other cheek” (utilizing the submissive quality of the dorsal part of the PNS), when implemented unwisely, has allowed those with vengeance (“Lucifers”) to become strong and overtake the earth with their anger (“Fight” response), control, their financial and political systems, as well as their fixation on animalistic sex. They did this as “Lucifers,” by predominantly becoming stuck in their utilization of the sympathetic nervous system. Look at the news. (Or, don’t.) It’s impossible to be unaware of the rampant “wars and rumors of wars.” This is because humanity has honed instinctual re-actions to ALL perceived stressful situations via the SNS.
When one is utilizing the sympathetic nervous system as one’s power source, the eyes do not see accurately! The brain does not reason intelligently! Remember, the SNS is intended for a life-threatening situation… only! The SNS drains the blood from the inner organs and the brain and puts the body in survival mode by enhancing the muscles for a quick get-away. The SNS was never intended to be utilized as the predominant master controlling one’s life! It is stupid! The body stuck in SNS mode is “Vain and Foolish!” Who would put a temper-tantrum throwing out-of-control emotionally weak three-year-old on the throne to rule and rein in one’s kingdom? And, yet, that is what many in today’s society have done to their own mental empire.
And yet, mankind has been assisted with a way out of its dilemma: the ventral vagus nervous system.
The ventral vagus has another profoundly important job, and that is to regulate the face and head muscles, to relax and open the eyes, temper the hearing of the inner ears, and to create the majesty of the human SMILE, something that no other animal instinctively can do. With the SNS (“Lucifer”) in charge, the eyes and ears do not have the calming and clarifying assistance of the ventral vagus. Without these fine facial nerves enlisted, “seeing, they see not, hearing, they hear not.” Without the ventral vagus as the “Lord” or overseer of one’s nervous system, the “heart” is hard; uncircumcised. Rather, with the ventral vagus (located near the heart) in “off” position, the body is not capable of using its access to wisdom and social engagement. Literally, one’s vision and hearing are ineffectual and untrustworthy when one is operating from the spinal nervous system! While utilizing the dorsal or the sympathetic nervous system, one is INCAPABLE of CO-municating effectively! This is the spiritual designation of being “blind and deaf.”
“Now, is the great day of my power,” claims Lucifer in the LDS Temple Endowment. And, he HAS reined “from the rivers to the ends of the earth.” Truly, there have been “none to molest, or make afraid.” With so many humans STUCK in their sympathetic or dorsal parasympathetic nervous systems, utilizing their eyes in ways that they THINK they are seeing, because of how the (S) diverts the energy to the muscles for fight-or-flight, and the (P) does not have the circuitry for the face or higher mental powers, the thinking, seeing, reasoning capacities are greatly reduced. Indeed, “seeing, they see not.” Thus, “Jesus'” injunction: “Why do ye follow blind (those without the ventral-vagus empowerment) guides?” If you do follow those who are operating with their ventral-vagus nerve at the helm in their lives, then you all “fall into the ditch together.”
Instead, it is the Ventral Vagus’ turn for power. Like Peter within the Temple Endowment, we must each turn to face the “Lucifer” part of our self and, with determination and conviction, “dismiss (him) without further argument.” Although Lucifer never likes being de-throned as one’s power source, True Power and authority, consistently applied, will cast him out of one’s kingdom and restore the fallen, “lone and dreary world” back to its pristine “Garden of Eden” state.
One’s physical well-being and one’s emotional well-being are integrally linked. Eve (ventral vagus), the eternal “helpmeet” to man, has the power and authority to now come to the rescue, righting every circuit in the body, making one healthy… and holy. Whereas the dorsal portion of the PNS was NOT myelinated, the ventral vagus branch is. As such, the messages which leave the 10th cranial nerve (its origin) and travel through the forward ventral branch have a great advantage. Myelination allows the messages to proceed to the visceral organs of the heart and lungs with lightning speed. The ventral messages also relax and open the nerves to the eyes, the ears, and the lower part of the face, allowing for clarity and accuracy of the senses as well as the ability to spontaneously and consciously SMILE! The ventral oversees the current situation of the body and can utilize a far greater wisdom than either the dorsal or sympathetic nervous system.
The true power and authority of the ventral vagus branch of the PNS lies in it ability to down-regulate each of the other parts of the ANS. With Eve (the ventral vagus circuit) on the throne as the “Overseer” of the body, all decisions are made from a frame of mind of: “What’s the best action I can take that will assist the long-term good of all?” The VV circuit is not self-seeking except that each action done for the benefit of everyone includes one’s self as well. Again, “Jesus” exemplified this principle by consistently mentoring: “THY will be done,” “THY WILL be done!” Whereas the dorsal branch and the sympathetic system RE-act from Fear, one living with “power and authority” lives from the original TRUST that life “has their back,” and that “all truly works together for good.”
Like the warm (versus hot or cold) bowl of porridge and the comfortable (not too soft or hard) chair or bed belonging to the “Three Bears,” which Goldilocks found appetizing and comfortable, the ventral vagus nerve utilizes the appropriate elixir for each setting. She knows that she is not running the show on her own; “Overseeing,” yes, fulfilling all the requirements of a well-running body by herself, no. Like a Bishop with two counselors, when the ventral vagus nerve is presiding, the sympathetic system and the dorsal branch of the parasympathetic system become her advisors and assistants.
With these three primary avenues for deciding one’s actions (the sympathetic branch of the ANS, the dorsal portion of the parasympathetic branch of the ANS, or the ventral portion of the parasympathetic branch of the ANS–what a mouthful!) there are also two hybrids.
(I welcome someone to create for me a better graphic.)
I have drawn here a chart representing the Autonomic Nervous System’s influence in our lives. On the left is portrayed the Sympathetic (“Lucifer”), the id, or the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.” Allowing us to make choices and thus learn what is “good” or “evil” for ourselves, this way of interacting with our world through “fight or flight” responses sends the blood to our muscles, toning them and making them “hot” and “hard” and capable of mobilizing to save our lives. The heart beats fast and the blood pressure is high. The “Daddy Bear” in Goldilocks with his hot porridge and hard chair and bed represents this sympathetic response. I have presented this as the season of SUMMER. Incapable of being sustained for very long, and intended for only truly life-threatening scenarios, this sympathetic nervous system can prove helpful only for short-term situations before it works to our own demise.
On the right in the above diagram is WINTER. Winter represents the “Mother Bear” in Goldilocks with her “cold porridge” and “soft” chair and bed. This is the dorsal branch of the vagus nerve (PNS). Utilizing this branch, the muscles’ have low levels of tone (are soft) and the blood pressure and heart rate are low and slow. Again, this state, though possibly helpful in extreme life-threatening situations, is not a state to be “stuck in” for long without lasting harm. Today, however, many find it “normal” to be depressed and to be paralyzed within a state of “learned helplessness.” This is the inappropriate use of the dorsal circuit and leads to a sad, slow death.
Yet, between and mediating the two opposing forces of winter and summer (the sympathetic and the dorsal branch of the parasympathetic) is “Baby Bear.” Baby Bear represents the intermediary seasons of SPRING and FALL. Normal blood pressure is appropriate for muscles that are neither tense nor flaccid, muscles that feel “just right.” In this state, we can enjoy our self, discover what makes us “tick,” as we likewise enjoy others in social camaraderie.
So… are the two contrasting and opposing forces bad or wrong to utilize?
No. Not if you enjoy playing games, or intimacy. Here’s why.
Refer again to the diagram above.
Between Spring and Summer, Summer and Fall, Fall and Winter, and Winter and Spring… are intermediary states.
When one’s environment is perceived as safe and the ventral vagus is the Overseer or “Lord” of one’s kingdom, then safety cues such as the melodic voice of a mother calming her infant elicits responses that support health, growth, and mental and physical healing and well-being. This is a state of IM-mobilization in peace. Curled up within her mother’s arms, the child nestles in safety. Entwined with her lover, the woman likewise cuddles in safety. This state of intimacy is utilized when the ventral vagus is in power and allowing the dorsal to operate under its direction. In this state, the system is flooded with feel-good neural transmitters; bonding, healing, and regeneration take place.
Likewise, other states of intimacy are possible with the empowered ventral vagus on the throne, intimate states which utilize movement requiring the assistance of the sympathetic nervous system. This state is mobilization in peace. Situations like this would be the occasion of dancing, and safe, sexual intimacy. In the diagram, this is shown at the top left, between Spring and Summer.
Between Fall and Summer would be physical interaction such as cooperative sports where the engagement is fun and emotionally safe. These safe movement activities require the sympathetic nervous system to assist the ventral vagus. This is also a state of mobilization in peace. Likewise, between Fall and Winter would be games of a quieter nature such as card or board games, again that are socially engaging and emotionally cooperative and warm. These largely immobilized social interactions team the dorsal with the ventral vagus and are additionally IM-mobilization in peace.
Whereas the sympathetic nervous system allows for “fight or flight” and mobilization of the body, and the dorsal branch of the parasympathetic nervous system allows for “rest and digest,” the ventral vagus branch of the parasympathetic nervous system can be called: “tend and befriend.” With this VV branch (Eve) as the “Lord” of our kingdom, the “Master of one’s house,” we are safe, we are socially engaging, and we are on our path to True Self-Discovery (gnosis). We may reflexively mobilize, but absent any fear or danger factor, we can use that energy to play, not fight. We may reflexively immobilize, but without the fear or danger factor we can feel safe cuddling with a loved one, or engaged in respectful conversation with a friend. Those interactions promote social engagement, empowerment, regeneration and healing on all levels.
