Commonly regarded as a genius, Einstein declared, “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity. And I’m not sure about the former.”
In more endearing terms, a popular meme is:
From the common sense of popular memes, to the uncommon ability to view the world as an Einstein, more and more of us are “getting it:” We are each “crazy,” “stupid,” bumbling fools, operating blindly and bumping into each other as we do.
It would be easy for most anyone, “crazy” or “stupid” or not, to logically and rationally view the current state of things in this world and be filled with apathy or skepticism… at best, and anger or vengeance… at worst. Yet, in order to solve our current potential demise as a mortal family, we must look OUTside of “normal” thinking patterns and beyond the current borders of accepted thought. We must look beyond a “normal mortal brain” or even a collection of “normal mortal brains.”
As individuals, we each have unique perspectives accrued from our own experiences in mortality and, thus, see the world from our own set of lenses. This experience becomes our belief system, our “truth.” Yet, while maintaining validity and respecting our unique experiences, we must also co-exist among 8 billion other ways to view our world.
While acknowledging “stupidity,” Albert Einstein certainly nailed it on some things. He said, “We can not solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them.”
Not one of the 8 billion unique perspectives sees and understands everything. And so, (blind) mankind has reached outside of himself to find the answers. Science and religion have been the two main go-to sources for answers. Like Band-Aids, each have attempted to calm the unrest of not-knowing by creating something “Bigger” and “Better” and outside of “us,” some thing or some “One” to fear and to clean up humanity’s messes.
Although “stupid” and “crazy,” we seem to come into humanity pre-programmed to seek and learn. There is a formula ubiquitously used for getting the story on a subject. From journalists, to police investigations, to researchers of all levels, the “Six W’s” are considered basic in information-gathering:
Who, What, Where, When, Why, and hoW?
“I keep six honest serving-men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who.”
Though we “seek,” “ask,” and “knock” (Matthew 7:7), the quality and integrity of our questions will determine the answers we ultimately receive. While Religion and Philosophy have attempted to answer the Who (am I?), Where (did I come from?), and Why (do I exist?), History and Archaeology have been more focused on the When? And Science on the What?
The answers to the “Why’s” provide that which our egos hunger for, giving purpose and meaning to life, a feeling of “specialness,” “better-than.” Yet, when others, or collective groups of others’ purposes counter our own, two “special” groups must battle it out for “Alpha” status, thus the “Holy Wars” which have permeated history. “*WE* are (our) God’s chosen people. *WE* are to inherit the promised land, heaven, Truth, etc.” Thus, “wars and rumors of wars” are rampant.
What are we to do?
Literally… WHAT ARE WE TO DO?
Have we been asking the wrong questions? Or have our questions been appropriate but our mentors have not?
IF our current state of thinking has created our problems, our ignorance/ “craziness”/ “stupidity,” then HOW are we to maneuver through and BEYOND them, intact, integrous, and compassionately?
I propose that our pure little children know HOW.
I also propose that beyond the what/ when/ where/ who/ and why… HOW is the beginning of our “most important question to ask.”
Our little children, who have not yet been inculcated with society’s “common sense,” operate from a deeper, purer, more common sense. Again Einstein nailed it when he defined a counterfeit sense that we as cultural groups hold in common as “the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen.” Yet, can pure, unadulterated young children lead us into a heaven on earth? Again, I propose that YES, they can.
HOW can little children lead us?
Children KNOW that they do not know. Children do not CARE that they do not know. Children don’t worry about not knowing, they are not concerned with tomorrow, they don’t fret about the past. Children exist to PLAY and to explore, to interact and to learn. Until ruined by adults (ADULT-erated bigger children who THINK they know), pure young children (about 3-5 years of age), are ALIVE with confidence, curiosity and a stimulating drive to have fun while interacting peacefully.
Little children act from pure Feeling. Without words. Their question is:
“HOW do I live that FEEEEELS GOOD now?”
While each mortal seems to be wired to *SEEK*, children seek NOT for money, glory, fame, control, or any other “ADULT-erated” “thing,” but… CHILDREN SEEK TO PURSUE HAPPINESS. Young toddlers are attracted to the “virtuous, lovely, good-report, and praise-worthy” happenings, those things that are within sight, yet just slightly out of reach.
And what fuels their seeking? What rewards a young child’s question? Neural floods of stimulating chemicals that make them FEEL GOOD! Children naturally thrive on HAPPY Feeling, Warm interaction, JOY! Not needing a religion or scriptures to teach them from withOUT, children just KNOW that they exist to pursue happiness, they were created to feel JOY! HAPPINESS is their fuel, their steering wheel, that which drives them.
As a little child pursues his or her own FEEEEEEELING of Happiness, their happiness infects and assists everyone else’s. A pure little child of about 3–5 instinctively shares, sees no skin-color, treats all others with kindness, makes sure that all within the group are having fun and pursuing their happiness together. Naturally.
It is not until one’s self-awareness begins accumulating value from their mental “knowings,” that the value of their individual existence is threatened by anyone who disagrees with their accepted truths. After the ability to reason and think logically (at about seven and beyond), we look for “friends” who support our individual ego. Even before sexual exploration, mental “petting” is sought: “You stroke my ego, I’ll stroke yours.”
Because “ADULT-erated” bigger children (who do not accept the reality of their crazy stupidity) are the teachers and care-givers, dispensing as well as validation, the food and shelter required to live, children gradually shift their wide-eyed innocent perception for the narrowed focus of cynical accumulation of facts that lend credence to their own growing stock-pile of “knowledge.” Slowly, “another one bites the dust” and a pure little child becomes likewise “ADULT-erated.”
Although the greatest scientists and religionists of all time have obviously not asked the right questions because their answers have led them to detours, a child can. The child’s brain has the ability and capacity to understand HOW to live and WHAT is Really Important. A child’s brain, still plastic and pure, has not become (what is considered) “normal” and is, thus, capable of expansion.
Little children are led by their feelings. In scripture language, the pure feeling of a “YESSSS!” motive is called: “the words of Christ,” or “the Holy Ghost.” When a little child has an idea or begins an action, they tune INSIDE for the feeling. A pure “YESSSS!” means “continue” and leads them to JOY and accomplishment. This is the pure “pursuit of happiness.” This is the reason why the child exists. This is the child relying on no one else’s direction or mandate, but only the creative curiosity that compels him or her to “ask, seek, and knock.” Little children, pure unadulterated children, those who know the question to ask: “Do I receive a ‘YESSSSS!’ from the contemplation of this thought?” live in a state of “eternity” within “the kingdom of heaven.”
So, is it too late for those of us who have passed through physical childhood and become ADULTerated? No.
“And again I say unto you, ye must repent, and become as a little child, and be baptized in my name, or ye can in nowise receive these things. And again I say unto you, ye must repent, and be baptized in my name, and become as a little child, or ye can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God.” (3 Nephi 11:37-38)
The above “scripture,” translated, merely means: “change your mind, meekly and without judgment, and live in the wonder and the now as precious little children do.” Yes, become (again) as a pure little child.
Little children whose purity has been maintained and have been mentored in a respecting environment, interact with a level of social camaraderie that is breath-takingly wondrous to behold. Although rare in today’s world, I HAVE experienced this. Often.
Children KNOW “heaven on earth.” They pray without words but with the intent of their correct questioning: “Thy* kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.” In other words, they live for the good of all within their social experiences.
Is someone in pain? They all experience that pain together and seek to rectify it. Is someone without? They instinctively reach out to share. Little children know how to live… because they know the question to ask (“How do I feel?”) and they know which answer provides the best solution (“GOOOOOOD!”)
“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” (1 John 4:7-8) Each moment we exist in love, or rather, with wide-eyed and accepting eyes and gentle hearts, we are growing in spirit. When we receive all of life’s experiences with a spirit or sense of “rejoicing with exceeding gladness” (see Matthew 5:12), we are living, interacting, and asking the question as a pure little child. We are truly pursuing HAPPINESS. For All. Period.
The greatest enemy of this pure pursuit of happiness, and of unconditional love towards all equally, is the illusion of mortality; ADULT-erated vision. The return trip to pure vision and heaven on earth is to continually ask the question of childhood: “Does this thought, word, or action fill me with a continual sense of wonder and aliveness?” If “YESSSS!” then follow it. If not, choose again. For THIS Question, that which pure little children continually ask… without words… leads the individual AND THE CULTURE, into heaven on earth. For all.
“Then it was as if I suddenly saw the secret beauty of their hearts, the depth of their hearts where neither sin nor knowledge could reach, the core of reality, the person that each one is in the eyes of the divine. If only they could see themselves as they really are, if only we could see each other that way all the time, there would be no more need for war; for hatred, for greed, for cruelty. I suppose the big problem would be that we would fall down and worship each other.” ~ Thomas Merton
Pure, little children did not produce the problems of our world. It was the adult-erated bigger little children who began asking the wrong questions, seeking answers from outside themselves, attempting to stock-pile and profit for them self alone, that produced the problems. But, returning again to pure, wide-eyed vision and concern for all while we pursue happiness and social camaraderie, we can and will return… together… into a “heaven on earth.”
“HOW DO I FEEEEEEL THIS MOMENT?… AND NOW THIS MOMENT?… AND NOW THIS MOMENT?…” If “GOOOOOD” I continue. If not, I stop and reevaluate and ask again.
