Young children have so much to teach us.
I often picture a young child of about four years old…. “Why?” “why?” “why?” seems to be their general vocabulary. They KNOW that they do NOT know anything. They WANT to “figure it all out.” HOWEVER, and this, I believe, is of utmost importance… they do NOT get mentally bent-out-of-shape because they do NOT know. Blissfully aware of their vast “ignorance” (of “the things of This world” and those things that seem to be important to all the Big people in their life), they content themselves by playing with and interacting with those things and people in their part of the sandbox that appear of interest at that particular moment in time.
Like a little chipmunk gathering nuts. They may lose their interest and forget what they are doing over and over again as they become distracted by other things and people around them. Without being fixated on any “goal” of knowing or achieving, they simply ARE. They may scamper here, then scamper there. They may nibble for a while on something only to set it down and pick up something else instead. Young children are so content to just BE… KNOWING that, at some point, they WILL know that which they presently don’t know and that it’s all okay that way. They do NOT worry about their ignorance. The one thing that they DO KNOW is that it’s all okay. They can laugh. They can accept. They can Be.
Moroni’s question from the Book of Mormon has long intrigued me (Moroni 10:4-5):
“And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And whatsoever thing is good is just and true; wherefore, nothing that is good denieth the Christ, but acknowledgeth that he is.”
Moroni is, in his own way, saying the same thing as other “true” prophets. “BE-come as a little child!” Accept all things. Believe what you are told. Let the words of this book find a place within your hearts. THEN, as you continue to live your lives (skip around your part of the great big round sandbox)… see if it proves itself true. Does this piece of information bring you lasting joy? Does it feel good and comfortable… in the long run? If so… hold onto it. It is “good”, “just” and “true” and acknowledges the “Christ,” or the truth of who you are. If not… let it go. Lay it down in the sand. No need to look back. No need to regret playing with or entertaining it. It’s purpose in your life is done. Over. Finished. (At least for now.)
As we, like little children, “believe ALL things and hold fast that which is true” we can live without worry (of the future) or regret (of the past), KNOWING that it’s Truly ALL GOOD and that the ONLY THING that is important is to… JUST BE HHHHAAAAPPPPPPPPPPYYYYY and live in PEACE!!!!! 🙂
As Joseph said in the 13th Article of Faith: “… we believe ALL things…” Just perhaps a “hard-hearted,” “past feeling,” “gotta prove and make sense of it all NOW–BEFORE I will believe or accept anything–” adult is the very antithesis of the “believing little child.” In my experience, those individuals who seem the most miserable are those who invest so much analytical, logical, anguish-filled mental capacity into trying to “force” their “knowing” that they are almost incapable of smiling, laughing, skipping, dancing and “being as a little child.”
Moroni qualified his promise by stipulating: “if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ” THEN… “he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.” However, I have found, if there is ANY part of us that does NOT want to embrace this new piece of truth or let go of the former “truth” that was incorrectly taking it’s place… we are without a “sincere” heart and “real” intent. So many of us want to, likewise, cling to the “arms of flesh” that have held us captive instead of having “faith in CHRIST” and the power of our “HOLY Ghost” to bring forth the real truth to us… thus setting us free.
Again, as true messengers seem to be trying in every way possible to express…“Don’t worry! Be HAPPY! It’s ALLL Good!”
Although so misunderstood by so many on this planet of “wise ones”… perhaps children can show us the way to putting Moroni’s challenge to the test and “proving” all things… by simply being happy and not worrying about the process of “proving.” Just entertaining the questions and having the experiences as we enJOY the journey! Let’s let the “Why’s” make us truly WISE!
